HOW TECHNOLOGY AFFECTS OUR RELATIONSHIPS? By Laura Vélez Osorio

Technological advances are an important thing in our daily life and it has changed us. Do you remember how your normal days before smart phones existed were? It was different, people just turn themselves on and off in a matter of seconds with those things on their hands all the time.

Internet, social networks and mobile devices connect the world, or at least that's what people say, they connect the world but disconnect the local society and make people act like if nothing is happening in the environment they are surrounded with. All of this has changed the way we communicate and maintain relations with other people in the matter that everything is more impersonal and cold and always using these devices to communicate just generate a bunch of problems all founded in misunderstandings, and also physical contact is very affected because of this.

People used to talk person to person much more than nowadays, meeting new people personally was more interesting than meeting people through a dating website or Facebook and calling someone on the phone to hear their voice was more special than just reading a Whatsapp message.

An excessive use of social networks and the Internet can have a negative effect on children and teenagers and even adults. It's like if they were made to make everyone a 2.0 addict but teenagers and children are more likely to suffer bullying, self-esteem problems, anxiety etc.

Also, all our actions in social networks, blogs and others are registered and it’s almost impossible to make the disappear, we can be found in Google and our information can be used for positive or negative purposes.

If I wasn't in the need to keep in touch with my family in Chile through social networks, and with some old school friends. I wouldn’t have Facebook or Whatsapp.
